(Remembered by Nicole F.)
While it’s kind of freaking me out that there are so many nostalgia Tumblrs created for things from my childhood (many of which I’m now following, of course), this is one of the things that makes me love going down memory lane.
In 1989, I was 4. The only video game system my family owned was an Atari. But as an avid Saturday morning cartoon watcher, it was only natural that I begged my parents for this cereal. To this day, I can remember the jingle that played as the then-unfamiliar corn-puff sprites danced around the screen: “Nin-ten-do! It’s a cereal! Wow!” I was sold.
When I finally wore my parents down and was able to taste the sweet promise of advertising, I was quite disappointed. I’m unable to remember what was so bad about this cereal, but I know that it did not rescue breakfast. Of course my parents tried to pull the we’re-not-buying-you-any-more-cereal-until-you-finish-this-box tactic, but they weren’t going to let their only child starve.
The Nintendo Cereal System sat in the cupboard under the sink until about 1992, when my dad decided some majorly overdue cleaning was called for. I wish I could say that we kept the box, as I’m sure it could have brought a decent chunk of change on eBay. But it ended up in the trash, along with a sprouting potato. Just two of the many casualties of the 80s, I guess.
More cereal I didn’t know about but wish I did. I sucked at Super Mario Bros. so maybe it’s for the best that I didn’t...
